Bioshock 2 is officially DRM-free! Effectively, anyway: 2K games made the announcement on the Cult Of Rapture Website, stating that “There will be no SecuROM Install limits for either the retail or digital versions of Bioshock 2, and SecuROM will be used only to verify the game’s executable and check the date.

Lil Sis 1Bioshock 2 is officially DRM-free! It’s still limited by standard Games For Windows Live, though the 15 activations available can be reset with a call to Microsoft. Read more about it on the Cult Of Rapture website.

You think this = DRM-free? Seriously?

You couldn’t get this any more wrong.

BioShock 2 still has DRM. Even without install limits, it still installs SecuROM to your system, and can potentially corrupt your Optical drives and OS because ot this.

Oh, and it uses Games for Windows Live – Which limits your installations opportunities via online activation.

And if you buy it on Steam, that’s all on top of the Valve layer of DRM.

      This is completely incorrect.

Securom and GFWL are still present. Activation limits have been moved from SecuRom to GFWL. GFWL does a street-date check and something vaguely referred to by 2K as “verifying the executable” though they have been unwilling to state what they actually verify about the executable.

Bioshock 2 is in no way DRM free. It’s still online authentication with Securom and 15 limit GFWL activations. And then the online MP is only supported in 26 countries. Otherwise you are screwed. This article is a load of BS. Stop taking money to spread lies from 2k.

That’s not DRM free. That’s just a different type of DRM. Let’s try to keep things correct here, shall we?

Isn’t this still a DRM strategy? I mean it is still a form of access control imposed on the consumer. I don’t think SecuROM has any form except for it’s DRM-form. It merely being there IS a DRM strategy, therefore the game is not DRM free. And 15 activation limits by GFWL is also DRM.

If you think BioShock 2 is DRM-free, well then I have some software to sell you. It’s “DRM-free” all it does it call my servers once to get permission to activate, and then after 15 times you will have to contact me to get permission again. But I assure you, it is DRM-free!!!

      More like “Free DRM!”

You both have points and you both missed that if you buy it on Steam you have THREE DRMs, you have the SercROM for its EXE, you have GFWL which to be fair is just that to pull you out of the game everytime an achieivement comes up and you have Steam, the sneak DRM. Oh and Steam IS DRM, but the best type of DRM, you can redownload as many times as you want, it has an offline mode and so on. You can’t get away from the fact it’s still DRM.

EPIC Fail. What are activation limit and Securom?
Oh shit they’re DRM. Yes, they are.

For The Void’s sake, give ‘em a break. Are you really going to install it fifteen times before it comes to the end of its natural lifespan? Hmm? HMMM?

    • Lulz said:

      @ The Relic

I’ve installed plenty of games over 15 times, so keep your HMMMMM to yourself.
