Are PC gamers being left out in the cold again?

Infinity Ward have dropped yet another bombshell on the PC Community, revealing that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will support only 18 players on-line, as opposed to the 32 of previous Call of Duty instalments. Speaking in a Best Best Live Chat (via Kotaku) Infinity Ward developer Mackey McCandish said that 18 players would be the focus for series from here on out, and that the number helped the team balance map sizes, classes, perks and challenges most effectively.

The news isn’t likely to endear Infinity Ward to PC gamers already unhappy with the loss of dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2 and their replacement with the new  peer-to-peer based IWnet matchmaking system. Some of PC gamers objections to the peer-to-peer IWnet have centred on the limited capacity that individual machines hosting games can actually manage- and we suspect this may have more to do with the 18 player limit than gameplay balancing. After all, console multi-player, which runs on a similar peer-to-peer system is arguably limited to 9v9 matches for just those reasons. But the news will come as a blow to many PC players, especailly those in clans used to playing COD4 in greater numbers- who gets to sit on the bench during clan matches ?

We contacted Activision following this news, but they were unavailable for comment.

Any info on how many players this will actually affect? Yes, the PC lobby are shouting loud and shrilly at all the bad news that is being drip-fed by Infinity Ward, and this is a clear example of how the PC versions of games are being downgraded to match console limits, but how big a deal is this really?

From what I’ve been reading over the last half hour or so, multiplayer is pretty much screwed. Don’t IW understand that most people can’t host or join a net game these days with all the ‘traffic shaping’ that most ISP’s use? You’ll get in a game for a couple of minutes before the ISP’s software kicks in and boots you out!

This is death of PC gaming by a 1,000 cuts. this being about number 831 in the last 5 years, since the ‘multi-format next-gen’ came along!

It joins DRM, 12 hour games, $5 horse armour mods, Starcraft coming in 3 games instead of 1, Mass Effect and Jade Empire now being the type of ‘RPG’s’ we get, an ever dumber PC gaming media and on and on. Is it any wonder PC retro gaming is growing in leaps and bounds?!
