World_of_Warcraft_89The prospect of a World of WarCraft movie excited a lot of WOW fans, and the news that former cult favourite director Sam Raimi would be helming it sent even more fanboy hearts a flutter. Their faith might just pay off as  Raimi said his intention is to say as true to the games fiction as possible and named his principle script writer in an interview with MTV.  ”We want to be really faithful to the game…to the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents,” Raimi insisted.

“But we would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.” Robert Rodat’s previous writing credits include Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed “Saving Private Ryan,” and the Mel Gibson hit “The Patriot” and  Raimi seems really enthusiastic to have Rodat, known for his strong character writing, at hand.

wow-wrath-of-the-lich-king“I’ve never made a video game movie, but my approach would be to work with the best character writer I can find, “he said,” which in this case is Robert Rodat, and tell a great character story within the fantastic environment of the world of WarCraft, while staying true to their mythology.”

The news of an original script and story puts to rest rumours, primarily started by an IMDB entry that has since been amended. that the WarCraft movie would be based on the story behind the ‘Wrath of the Lich King’ expansion, which is a fan favourite and has already become a New York Times best selling novel.
