My New Year's day hangover was mercifully shorter than my fading fond memories of 2009, but looking back through that skid-tinted pane and with the aid of a little perspective from M2 Research, I've realised just how bloody awful 2009 was for many people in the games industry:

EA has officially announced Dead Space 2 for PC and console. The surprise horror hit of 2008 from EA's Visceral Games is returning with Isaac Clarke, who "calls the shots" this time. We don't know what that entails, but we will see familiar Zero-G and space-vacuum environments, plus new weapons and more gruesome Necromorphs to fight than before. Look out for more information on the Dead Space website. Incidentally, Dead Space scored 9 ...

While EA recently announced that it had pruned the ailing Godfather license from its books, 2K's Mafia series is going from strength to strength. That doesn't mean that the Mafia II team isn't shedding a tear over what is clearly a victory in a long running mobster game war, "I found EA dropping the Godfather series quite sad to be honest," said 2K producer Denby Grace, "All of us at 2K love mafia and mobsters stories ...

Mythic Entertainment has now banned in excess of 10,000 accounts for its recently released MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning. These accounts aren't your garden variety MMO gamers, though: these belonged to gold farmers, widely regarded as spammer scumbags by honest gamers and despised by MMO developers for breaching intellectual property rights and the T&Cs of the game. The figure currently stands at 10,578 accounts banned – which pretty much equates to sticking heads on poles as a stern warning to the ...

A beast of rare quality… the Greater-headed TPCG, as seen with the aid of EA's Spore Creature Editor demo, available for download as of 17 June. Oddly fascinating this… relatively speaking, I'm not enjoying it that much, but I can't stop making freaky creatures with it.

Both Mass Effect PC and Spore are to use SecuROM as copy protection for the retail versions. The controversial anti-piracy software requires an internet connection to connect to an EA server and verify every ten days. Derek French, technical producer at Bioware clarified the news, "An internet connection is not required to install, just to activate the first time, and every ten days after. You can be completely connectionless for nine days and encounter no problems playing Mass Effect. And you don't need ...
